In the 1940s Suri Nagamma, a woman from what is now Andhra Pradesh, wrote regular letters to her brother that described events she had witnessed at Sri Ramanasramam. Though addressed to her brother, who wanted to keep in touch with events in the ashram, they were also written for publication and appeared regularly in a Telugu magazine. The letters were eventually collected and published in Telugu, and in the late 1950s the first English edition appeared. Originally the letters appeared in two volumes, with a residual collection of material appearing separately. All of these disparate sources have now been consolidated into one volume. The book contains dialogues that took place between Bhagavan and devotees, descriptions of life in the ashram, stories that Sri Ramana told about his early life, and narrations of the lives of Indian saints.
